Bagasse or Kraft Takeaway Boxes: Which Should You Choose?

Published
Two natural cream bagasse hinged takeaway boxes, one open and one closed, on a white background

Two box types do most of the work in a takeaway: the hinged bagasse clamshell and the kraft paperboard box. Both take hot and cold food and both are sold by the case with no minimum order. This guide sets out how they differ, the sizes we stock and which one suits which dish, using the details on the product pages.

What each box is made of

Bagasse boxes are moulded from bagasse, the fibre left after sugarcane is pressed. They are natural cream, rigid, and the lid is hinged to the base and clips shut. Kraft boxes are made from kraft paperboard in natural brown, and most have a one-piece fold-over lid with interlocking tabs. The extra large burger box is a clamshell with a tab-lock front.

The bagasse range

The BB6, BB1, BB2 and BB3 product pages list them as suitable for hot and cold food, for reheating in the microwave and for the freezer.

The kraft range

The kraft boxes are plain, not printed, and are listed as suitable for hot and cold food.

How to choose

Compartments: only the bagasse range has them. If you sell set meals with sides, meal prep or school lunches, the BB2 and BB3 keep food apart without a second container.

Burgers: the BB6 suits a standard burger and the kraft extra large box suits a big one. See the burger packaging guide.

Look: bagasse is cream and moulded; kraft is brown paperboard. Pick the one that fits your brand.

Portion shape: kraft boxes are smaller and shallower, bagasse boxes are wide and open. A wrap or a mixed grill sits well in the No2; a full plate of food suits the BB1.

What to add

Add a paper carrier bag for takeaway orders and sauce pots for dips. For the wider choice of takeaway boxes, read how to choose takeaway food boxes.
