Bin Bags for Takeaways and Kitchens: Which Size to Buy
A busy kitchen gets through bin bags faster than almost anything else, and a bag that splits or is too small costs time every day. This guide covers the two black bin bag sizes we stock for commercial use, what each is made for and how to choose between them.
The two sizes we stock
- Large heavy duty bin bag: 45.7 x 73.7 x 99.1 cm (18 x 29 x 39 inch), black, case of 200.
- Extra large compactor sack: 57.2 x 86.4 x 119.4 cm (22.5 x 34 x 47 inch), black, case of 100.
Both sizes are given as flat width x opened width (across the side gussets) x length. Always measure your bin the same way before you order.
Large bags for everyday bins
The large bag is the everyday black sack for commercial kitchens, takeaways, cafes, schools and offices. It fits standard dustbins and large kitchen and swing bins. The film is LDPE, around 30 to 35 microns thick (120 to 140 gauge). LDPE tends to stretch rather than split when the bag is full of food waste, packaging and general rubbish. At 99.1 cm long there is enough bag to fold over the rim of the bin and still tie the top when it is full.
Extra large sacks for compactors and big bins
The compactor sack is made for waste compactors and the big bins behind busy kitchens, bars, hotels, offices and schools. It is heavier, around 40 to 50 microns (160 to 200 gauge), and longer at 119.4 cm. That suits compacted loads and bulky, awkward waste such as flattened boxes and kitchen scraps. If your bin or compactor takes a bag this size, it saves changing bags as often.
Which one should I choose?
- Standard dustbin, kitchen bin or swing bin: the large bag.
- Waste compactor or a very large commercial bin: the extra large compactor sack.
- Mixed set-up: many sites use the large bag inside the kitchen and the compactor sack for the outside store. Order both in one go.
If you are not sure, measure the inside width and height of the bin. The bag should be at least as long as the bin is tall, plus enough to fold over the rim.
Why a black bag?
Black film keeps the contents out of sight on the way to the outside bins, which looks tidier in a shop or restaurant.
Tips for using them
- Fold the top over the rim before you fill the bag, so it stays in place.
- Do not overfill; a bag filled to the brim is the one that splits when it is lifted.
- Lift from the bottom or the knotted top, not from a thin point.
- Keep sharp items, such as bones and broken glass, in a separate hard container.
