Wooden Cutlery for Takeaways: Fork, Spoon, Knife and Chip Fork Sizes
Wooden cutlery is a standard item on most takeaway and cafe counters. The choice is simple, but sizes differ and the right piece depends on what you serve. Here is how the wooden cutlery we stock compares, with real lengths and case quantities.
The wooden range
- Fork: 16 cm (6.3 inch), four tines, case of 1000. See the birchwood fork.
- Dessert spoon: 16.5 cm (6.5 inch), oval bowl, case of 1000. See the birchwood dessert spoon.
- Knife: 16.5 cm (6.5 inch), serrated edge, rounded tip, case of 1000. See the birchwood knife.
- Chip fork: about 8.5 cm, two prongs, 1000 in a dispenser box. See the wooden chip fork.
The fork, spoon and knife are cut from natural birch wood with a smooth finish and suit hot and cold food. All of them are in our cutlery range.
Which piece for which food?
Fork
The four tines pick up salad, pasta, rice dishes, chips and cake, and the flat handle is easy to hold. It is the all-rounder for a meal in a box.
Dessert spoon
The oval bowl covers puddings, yoghurt, ice cream, soups, curries and rice dishes. For a cafe or a curry or Chinese takeaway, it is often the first piece to stock.
Knife
The serrated edge gives a wooden knife enough bite for burgers, pies, quiche, cake and cooked vegetables, and it spreads butter or sauce. It suits event buffets as well as takeaway meals.
Chip fork
The small two-prong chip fork is made for chips, fish and street food eaten on the go. It comes in a dispenser box, which suits a chip shop counter, a market stall or a food truck. See all chip forks.
How many should you order?
Every wooden piece is sold in a case of 1000, so one case of each gives you a complete station. Many kitchens use more forks than knives, because a fork goes with almost every dish. Think about your menu: a chip shop mainly needs chip forks, a curry house needs spoons and forks, and a cafe selling pies or cakes needs knives too.
Wooden or reusable?
If the cutlery is meant to be washed and used again, such as in a canteen, at events or in a staff room, the clear heavy duty polypropylene (PP) fork, spoon and knife are built for that, in cases of 1000. For cutlery that goes out with a takeaway order, wood is the usual choice.
Pack it with the rest of the order
The light natural colour of birchwood sits well next to kraft food boxes and paper carrier bags. Add serviettes and sauce pots to the same bag. Our guide to cutlery, serviettes and sauce pots has the full list.
