Pizza Box Tripods (Pizza Savers): What They Do and When to Use One
Open a delivery box and find the lid stuck to the cheese, and the customer's first impression of the pizza is a messy one. A pizza box tripod, also called a pizza saver, is a cheap fix. It is a small three-legged plastic stand that goes in the middle of the pizza before the lid is closed.
What a pizza box tripod does
The tripod holds the lid up, so the card does not press down onto the cheese and toppings when boxes are stacked in a delivery bag or on the counter, or when steam softens the lid on the way. The customer lifts it out and the pizza is ready to eat.
Our pizza box tripods
Our white plastic pizza box tripods are made from polypropylene (PP) and sold in a case of 1000.
- About 3.8 cm tall
- Round top about 4 to 4.5 cm across
- Three thin legs that leave only small marks in the pizza
- They nest inside each other, so a case takes up very little space next to the oven
Which pizzas need one?
- Large pizzas. A wide lid has more room to sag in the middle.
- Lots of melted cheese or tall toppings. These are the pizzas most likely to touch the lid.
- Boxes that will be stacked. Several boxes in one delivery bag put weight on the top box.
Small pizzas in a 7 or 9 inch box have less room to sag, so many shops keep tripods for the larger sizes. Use what suits your menu.
Why it is worth the cost
A tripod is a small item, and a case of 1000 lasts a long time in a busy kitchen. The saving is in the complaints you avoid. Cheese stuck to the lid, a squashed topping or a lid that has gone soft on the way are the things customers remember about a delivery, and they are hard to spot before the box leaves the shop. Putting a tripod in the large and loaded pizzas takes a second and removes the problem.
Fitting it into the pizza routine
Keep the case by the boxing-up station, with the grease liners and folded boxes. The order is simple: liner in the base, pizza in, tripod in the centre, lid closed. Because the tripods nest, you can keep a handful in a tub at arm's length and refill it from the case as needed. Tell new staff once and it becomes part of the routine.
Using a tripod with boxes and liners
A tripod is one part of the pizza box set-up:
- Start with a box that matches the pizza. We stock 9 inch, 10 inch and 12 inch plain brown pizza boxes, in cases of 100. See the pizza box sizes guide.
- Add a grease liner under the pizza, for example the 12 inch liner, to help keep grease off the card.
- Place the tripod in the centre of the pizza, then close the lid.
For your own branding, custom printed pizza boxes are available separately. Browse everything in pizza boxes and liners.
