This is the square 9 x 9 inch foil container in the shallow 1.5 inch depth, sometimes called a No9 tray. It measures about 22.9 x 22.9 cm and 3.8 cm deep and holds about 1500 ml, which suits a lasagne, a tray bake, roast vegetables, a rice dish or a sharing portion. Caterers, takeaways, bakeries and school and council kitchens use it for family meals and buffet dishes.
Aluminium foil lets you cook, reheat and serve in the same tray: it goes in a conventional oven and in the freezer, so meals can be made ahead and baked when needed. The trays nest inside each other, so a case of 200 stores neatly.

Both are 22.9 x 22.9 cm (9 x 9 inch) across the top and take the same lid. The shallow tray is 3.8 cm (1.5 inch) deep and holds about 1500 ml, for lasagne, tray bakes and sides; the deep tray is 5.1 cm (2 inch) deep and holds about 2100 ml, for casseroles, curries and larger family portions.
Can the tray go in the oven or microwave?
